I always enjoyed the sight of these hard-bodied young men. They would never tell us what they were doing, but were usually quite friendly and willing to join in conversation and games. This was one of the reasons I loved the place I got to be close to these macho military guys in a casual atmosphere. We were soon joined by a company of Airborne Rangers who were training at the base. ![]() After we broke up for the day, we went to the bar on the base where we could continue our discussions informally while drinking cheap beer and playing darts or pool. The first day of the conference was fascinating and I learned an awful lot about the project. Of course we were never told what they were training for, we were just told to stay out of their way and especially to stay out of the woods. ![]() While technical folk like myself might be gathering in the meeting rooms, various military units would be training at locations around the base. The place was a mix of conference center and training grounds. It wasn't a large base and there were seldom more than 40 - 50 people on base at any one time. ![]() The conference was also being held at one of favorite places an unusual military installation near the ocean. I was doing some classified work for the Army and this was my chance to get together with other contractors to discuss the overall project. I had been looking forward to the conference for some time.
